Soittaminen on työ, jota rakastan, mutta toinen identiteettini on ehdottomasti _tarhuri_. Kaikenlainen pihassa ja puutarhassa väsääminen kuuluu tarhurin olemukseen, mutta keskeisin osa tarhuriuttani ovat mehiläiset. Niiden kanssa imeytyy osaksi vuodenkiertoa kuin noiduttuna. Voi sanoa, että mehiläishoito muuttaa ihmistä peruuttamattomasti. Missä kulkeekin, ympäröivässä maisemassa alkaa nähdä siitepöly- ja mesikasvien kukinnan tai niiden puuttumisen. Sääennuste saa ajattelemaan hyviä keruuilmoja, pesäkäynnin lykkäämistä ukkosen takia, tai että kuinkahan emon pariutumislennon käy näin tuulisessa säässä. Pimeän talven jälkeen henkiset tuntosarveni ojentuvat lumoutuneesti kohti sitä ensimmäistä leutoa ja tyyntä päivää, jolloin kotipihan mehiläiset lähtevät puhdistuslennolle.

Tänä vuonna Etelä-Suomessa talvea ei oikein ollutkaan, mutta nyt kevät on joka tapauksessa hyvässä vauhdissa. Aurinkoisina, lämpiminä päivinä puolenpäivän aikaan nuoret työmehiläiset käyvät suuntalennolla, ensimmäistä kertaa ulkona. Ne havainnoivat pesän välitöntä ympäristöä ja lentävät eräänlaista suuntimiskuviota päät lentoaukkoa kohti, jotta osaavat takaisin, jos jostain syystä joutuvat pesän ulkopuolelle. Kestää vielä monta viikkoa ennen kuin niistä tulee kerääjämehiläisiä. Siihen asti ne tekevät sisällä siivoojan, ruokkijan, lämmittäjän ja vartijan töitä.

Osa vanhimmista mehiläisistä lentää kauempana tutkimassa, löytyisikö taloudellisen lentosäteen sisäpuolelta mettä tai siitepölyä niin paljon, että sitä kannattaisi lähteä hakemaan isolla porukalla. Leskenlehdet ja krookukset kukkivat siellä täällä, mutta pajuja pitää odottaa vielä. Onneksi pesissä riittää ruokaa.

Mehiläisten ei tarvitse miettiä ihmisten tauteja – eikä minunkaan juuri silloin, kun seison katselemassa niiden lentoa. Hetken voi olla rauhassa omilta ajatuksiltaan ja maailman kiehunnalta. Sellaisia hetkiä tarvitsemme nyt kaikki.

I love my job as a flautist, but l have another working role as well, one that I call ”the keeper”. This identity includes all kinds of pottering around the house and garden, but an absolutely central part of it is beekeeping.

Living with bees changes you irreversibly. Wherever you go, you start to see the landscape in terms of possible nectar and pollen sources. Listening to the weather report makes you think of a good flying day, or having to put off the hive visit because of thunder, or how the young queen will do on her mating flight with such gusty wind. After a long, dark winter my mental antennae magically extend towards the first calm and mild day, when my bees finally go on their cleansing flight and the bee year starts.

There was not much of a winter this year in Southern Finland, but now the spring is well on its way. On sunny, warm days around noon, the young worker bees come out for the first time to get their bearings, so they will know their way back home. It will be many weeks before they start as collector bees. Meanwhile, they go back inside and work at feeding the larvae, and cleaning, heating and guarding the hive.

Some of the oldest bees fly further away to investigate. They scout the environment to find any food sources good enough to make serious collecting worthwhile. There are some coltsfoot and crocuses around, but the willow bloom is still days away. Fortunately there is food for everyone inside the hive, until the grand pollinator restaurant opens.

The bees do not need to think about human diseases – and, while I stand there watching their flight, neither do I. For this moment I am free from my anxious thoughts and the tumult of the world. This kind of momentary serenity is something that we all need now. I hope you, too, find it somewhere, for today and every day.
